County Commissioners and Irish Dancing
For our May 2nd Muster & Mingle event, we had an amazing Double Header event. We served sliced Honey Baked hams, with fruit and veggies and cupcakes. After everyone was full, the Miami County Commissioners joined us to give us a ‘State of the County’ presentation. Mr. Wade Westfall, Commission President went first, walking us through how the presentation would go and introducing his fellow commissioners. Mr. Ted Mercer, went next, giving us some updates from the Miami County Engineers projects in 2022. He also spoke on the legal system in the county, from Common Pleas Court and their new ‘Second Chance’ Drug Court, to the Clerk of Courts, the Municipal Court, and finally Job & Family Services. Mr. Mercer ended his presentation by talking about the current renovation project of the Grandstand at the Miami County Fairgrounds.
Mr. Mercer was followed by Mr. Gregory Simmons, Commission Vice President. He continued to walked us through the legal system in the county, speaking on Juvenile and Probate Courts, West Central Juvenile Center, and the Miami County Sheriff’s Department, who were our guests for a Muster & Mingle back in Feburary. He told us about updates in the Sheriff’s Department and the Jail, and told us about jail renovations that are upcoming. Mr. Simmons talked about the busy year that the Emergency Management Agency had, as 2022 was a very active weather year for the county. He also spoke on the Miami County Veterans Service Commission, and their plans to increase their community outreach for 2023. They showed photos of the new building One Stop Shop Commerce Center being built at the corner of St Rt 55 and Barnhart Rd in Troy.
Miami County Commission President Wade Westfall closed the presentation out by speaking on a wide variety of county services, from the County Auditor to the Miami County Animal Shelter, which has the proud distinction of being a No-Kill shelter. He then walked us through an overview of the county’s finances, from the allocation of American Rescue Plan Act funds, to an overall breakdown of general fund revenue sources. He opened the floor for questions, and even stayed behind to speak with veterans one on one. If interested, you can view the complete State of the County presentation here.
Following the Commissioner’s presentation, we enjoyed a performance from the McGovern Irish Dancers. Home to top National titles, a World Champion, and other Regional and Local titles, McGovern Irish Dance trains their students for excellence and success while increasing confidence, self-image, and growth for each and every student.
McGovern Irish Dance offers exceptional Irish dance instruction from ages 2 – 102 for adults and children from beginner to championship levels. We strive to develop the self-esteem, confidence, and Irish dance skills of each dancer in a positive nurturing environment where all of our students can reach their full potential.
We work to instill a sense of unity and friendship among our students and their families through a variety of Irish cultural events such as the Dayton Celtic Festival, Celtic Fest Ohio, Dayton’s A World A’ffair, Troy Festival of National, Global Fest in Lafayette IN and more. Our dancers also have several opportunities to participate in local, national and international dance competitions.
The dance was enjoyed by all, young and old alike!
