Estate Planning Informs Vets
On Wednesday February 26th, we met again at the Tipp Center for Muster & Mingle. We were joined by local lawyer, Frank Patrizio, for a very informative evening. The night started with dinner, italian sausages, peppers and onions, mashed potatoes, and pudding cake. We even had a surprise from Mrs. McKenna, she made her delicious pumpkin cake by popular demand!
After dinner, we were joined by Stacey from Oak Street Health. She wanted to share with our veterans about some health information that works in conjunction with their VA coverage. After Stacey spoke, Frank took to the podium. He passed out several packets of information to all of our attendees. An example of a Durable Power of Attorney, a State of Ohio Health Care Power of Attorney, and a State of Ohio Living Will Declaration. He walked us through all of the documents, explaining all of the different occasions you might need each one. He also explained who you should choose as an executor for your will, to ensure that your wishes are carried out, without delay or confusion.
He also talked about options for your home, the most interesting of which was giving it to your children now and remaining in the home, with the expectation being that you would be allowed to remain in the home until death or disability. He answered quite a few questions from the group about taxes, living wills, and DNR tattoos. The last one is not actual a legal document, in case you were wondering as well. He discussed new technology that allows you to carry digital copies of those documents, in case you are traveling, but was very clear that digital copies won’t replace the need for actual physical copies. He also reminded us to make sure that if you place ‘hard copies’ of these documents at home in a safe, make sure someone actually knows the combination!
We are so appreciative of the time that Mr. Patrizio spent with us, and everyone really learned a lot. He made a joke that he gave everyone a $275 hour of information, but it was priceless to our veterans!
