Knowledge Blooms with OSU Master Gardener Sue!
On Wednesday May 29, we held our Muster & Mingle in Tipp City. The weather was beautiful and the crowd was excited to learn more about gardening and plant care. While everyone was enjoying some socializing time, we were excited to learn that one of our veterans brought some baby Mother of Thousands plants to share with anyone who wanted to grow this beautiful plant for themselves. They went really quickly, but she promised to bring more to a future event.
Dinner was a ‘Build Your Own Burrito Bowl’ buffet, with all the fixings, from Hot Head Burrito. With a base of white rice and black beans, our veterans then had their choice of steak or chicken to top. After picking out a salsa and additional fixings, they got to dessert. Our Director of Development made dirt pudding cups for everyone, and they were a big hit!

After dinner was eaten, we welcomed OSU Master Gardener Sue McGatha to the ‘stage’. She began by asking the group if there were any experienced gardeners in the crowd, and several people raised their hands. The rest of the group were either inexperienced or very new. She walked us through an “Intro to Gardening” presentation, and even the seasoned gardeners in the room learned a thing or two. She began by talking about the difference between the different types of plants, from annuals to perennials and even the difference between bulbs and rhizomes. She then moved into the requirements for successful planting, like soil, water, and sun. After the end of her presentation, she opened the floor up for questions, and lots of questions were asked and answered. Sue even got contact information for one veteran so that she could consult with her colleagues and get a better answer.

We really enjoyed having Sue at our Muster & Mingle and we hope to have the OSU Master Gardeners back again in the future! Our next Muster & Mingle in Tipp City will be held on June 26, and we will have Josh Clatt from Concerned Veterans for America presenting. They have some information about pending legislation that you will want to hear! Check out our Upcoming Events page for more information about where you can find us next!
