Family Fun Day: A Summer Celebration of Joy and Togetherness
Operation Veteran and Caregiver Support’s Family Fun Day was everything summer should be: sunshine, laughter, sticky popsicle fingers, soaked t-shirts, and memories made across generations.
Nearly 30 children joined us along with parents, grandparents, and caregivers for an afternoon packed with old-fashioned outdoor fun. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of VFW Post 4874 Auxiliary, families were able to enjoy a free day filled with games, crafts, food, and plenty of opportunities to simply spend time together.
One of the most popular areas of the day was our carnival game section. Several games were generously provided by BSA Troop 295, helping us create a midway-style experience that kept children coming back for “just one more turn.” Young participants tested their skills at a fishing pond stocked with colorful plastic fish, tried their luck at ring toss, and rolled red, white, and blue balls down a game board in hopes of matching colors and earning bonus tickets.
Those hard-earned tickets could then be exchanged at our prize station, which quickly became a favorite destination. Children proudly cashed in their winnings for candy, bubbles, rubber ducks, and a variety of small toys. For many, choosing a prize was almost as exciting as winning the tickets themselves.

Creativity was on full display in the craft area, where children painted colorful rocks and created their own windsocks to take home. From patriotic themes to imaginative designs, every project reflected the unique personality of its young artist. The craft tables remained busy throughout the afternoon, proving that a little paint and creativity can go a long way.

Not every experiment was a perfect success—but sometimes those become the best memories. Our giant bubble station featured oversized wands and plenty of determination. While the bubble recipe we found online didn’t quite cooperate, the kids certainly did not let that stop them. They laughed, experimented, and enjoyed the challenge, turning what could have been a disappointment into another source of fun.

The undisputed champion of the day, however, was the water play area.
Armed with water guns and reusable sponge water balloons, children quickly transformed the lawn into a splash zone. Running, laughing, and occasionally plotting sneak attacks on unsuspecting family members, the kids embraced every opportunity to cool off in the summer heat. By the end of the afternoon, many participants headed home completely soaked—and completely happy.

Families also enjoyed our free-play area, which featured badminton, cornhole, horseshoes, frisbees, and balls of every size imaginable. One of the most rewarding sights of the day was watching parents, grandparents, and children playing together. In a world often dominated by screens and schedules, it was refreshing to see families simply enjoying one another’s company.

Adding an extra dose of excitement to the day, our friends from Troops in Town brought three historic military vehicles for families to explore. Children eagerly climbed aboard, honked horns, peeked into compartments, and learned about the important roles these vehicles played during their years of service. The trucks quickly became one of the day’s biggest attractions, and the opportunity to combine hands-on exploration with a little military history made for a memorable experience.
We extend our sincere thanks to Mike Haines and the entire Troops in Town team for sharing their vehicles, knowledge, and passion for preserving military history.

Another special attraction came courtesy of CampMulli DC Rabbitry, which brought several Continental Giant rabbits for families to meet. Often described as one of the largest rabbit breeds in the world, these gentle giants quickly captured the attention of children and adults alike. Many visitors were amazed by their size, with some rabbits rivaling the dimensions of a medium-sized dog. Despite the summer heat limiting their time outdoors, families enjoyed the opportunity to see these impressive animals up close, ask questions, and learn more about the breed. For many children, meeting a Continental Giant rabbit was a first-time experience and one they won’t soon forget.

Of course, all that playing worked up an appetite. Families gathered together for a lunch of hot dogs, chips, fruit cups, applesauce, mandarin oranges, and juice. Once everyone had enjoyed a meal and a chance to rest, the fun moved back outdoors for popsicles and another round of games and activities under the summer sun.

As the day came to a close, we asked participants what they’d like to see next year. Their responses were clear:
More trucks.
More water.
More painting.
And more popsicles.
We consider that a glowing review.
Family Fun Day was a wonderful reminder that meaningful moments don’t have to be complicated. Sometimes all it takes is sunshine, a few games, some creative activities, plenty of water, and a community willing to come together. We are grateful to every family who joined us and helped make the day such a success.
Thank you again to VFW Post 4874 Auxiliary for sponsoring the event and to Troops in Town for helping create an unforgettable experience for our families. We are already looking forward to next year’s Family Fun Day—and based on the feedback, we’ll be stocking up on extra popsicles.
